Shelter Services FAQ
Who qualifies for shelter?
Family Promise of Brevard provides shelter to families in Brevard County who have custody of at least one minor child (age 17 or younger) and are currently experiencing homelessness.

What does shelter include?
Shelter includes a safe place for families to stay together along with meals, case management, and connections to community resources that support long-term housing stability.

How long do families stay in shelter?
Shelter is intended to be short-term while families work with staff on a plan to secure stable housing as quickly as possible. The average length of stay is around 30 days.

Can the whole family stay together?
Yes. Family Promise of Brevard prioritizes keeping families together whenever possible, including families with older children or larger family sizes who may not fit traditional shelter models.

Do you help families find housing, employment, and childcare?
Yes and no. Staff provide navigation, case management, and resource connections to help families move into stable housing, but families are responsible for working their plan to rehouse.

How do I request shelter?
Families can submit a request through the website form. Staff will follow up to better understand your situation and discuss next steps.

What if we are not eligible for shelter?

Prevention Services FAQ
What is eviction prevention assistance?
Prevention services help families remain in their current housing through short-term case management and, when funding allows, financial assistance such as support with rent or utilities.
Who qualifies for prevention assistance?
Families must live in Brevard County and have custody of at least one minor child in the household.

Does Family Promise guarantee financial assistance?
No. Because requests for assistance exceed available funding, eligibility is based on program guidelines and available resources at the time of request.

What documentation may be required?
Financial assistance is prioritized for households able to provide documentation demonstrating imminent risk of eviction, such as a notice to vacate, eviction filing, or utility shutoff notice.

Why is documentation required?
Demand for assistance is greater than available funding. Documentation helps ensure limited resources are distributed as fairly as possible to families facing the most immediate housing crisis.

How quickly will someone respond to my request?
Our team strives to respond within 24-48 business hours, recognizing that many families contact us during urgent situations.

What if I do not yet have an eviction notice?
We understand that financial hardship often begins before formal legal notices are issued. While financial assistance may not yet be available, staff aim to provide information about other community resources that may help.
What if my situation involves domestic violence or safety concerns?
Dialing 211 can connect individuals confidentially to domestic violence support services and other appropriate resources available in Brevard County. If you are in immediate danger, please call 911.

If I am not eligible for financial assistance, can you still help?
When possible, staff aim to connect families to partner organizations and other community resources available throughout Brevard County or you can call 2-1-1 or text your zip code to 898211. You can also reach them by going to 211 Brevard - 24/7 Community Helpline | Crisis Lifeline
